27Message from the ChairmanI was appointed Representative Director, President & CEO of Maruho Co., Ltd. in December 1999. For 21 years since then, I worked to contribute to the development of an industrial society and the prosperous lives of people through our high- quality initiatives in dermatology.Maruho’s history began in Osaka in 1915 under its founder’s desire to “Contribute to society through medicine.” Maruho’s Corporate Philosophy represents the founder’s aspirations in a clear, universal manner, indicating our basic stance toward social contributions. Our Corporate Credo of “Pursuit of Truth” expresses our determination to make continuous efforts to “understandthe way things actually are, and envisioning the way they should be in the future” and advance toward realizing our vision. It represents the principle and the way of thinking that Initially, Maruho contributed to the health and better lives of people by introducing advanced drugs from overseas, then manufacturing and selling them in Japan. After the 1960s, while gradually increasing research and production sites in Japan, we established partnerships with pharmaceuticalcompanies mainly in Europe and promoted collaborations and licensing activities with pharmaceutical companies and research institutes both in Japan and overseas.To contribute to a sustainable society, we ourselves must be a company that maintains soundness in management and grows continuously. These days, as companies are required to be actively committed to social issues, such as ESG and the SDGs, we are determined to contribute to society by properly identifying society’s needs through our business activities and various measures to sophisticate our management systems, with the aim of building a robust management base and enhancing our corporate value. Upon assuming the position of Chairman in December 2020, I have chaired the Board of Directors, engaged in promoting initiatives to gain stakeholder trust while working to improve functions to further enhance our corporate governance.we should have no matter where we are. In implementing the Corporate Credo, the Basic Management Policy indicates the standard for determining values and making decisions, based on which we pursue happiness and growth as “individuals,” contribute to the development of the place (Maruho) where we realize them as “employees,” and contribute to realizing a better society as “members of society.” While firmly maintaining its Corporate Credo and Basic Management Policy, Maruho contributes to society through its business activities. Today, Maruho maintains a solid presence as a pharmaceutical company specializing in dermatology that is engaged in research, development, manufacture, and sales of high-quality pharmaceuticals. Recently, through co-creation of technologies and know-how with Group companies, which are engaged in various businesses beyond pharmaceuticals, the Maruho Group aims to help realize a society where everyone can live with a smile. Maruho aims to become a company that is constantly growing, advancing, and contributing to society while responding to the trust of its stakeholders.
