10P.19-20P.21The Maruho Group’s growth has been driven mainly by its dermatological drug business. However, in order to continue growth in the future and respond to people’s diversifying desires to live healthier, longer lives, it is necessary to venture into new business areas other than dermatology by combining the strengths of Maruho with those of its Group and partner companies. Based on this understanding, we are promoting joint research with academia and working to enhance alliances with overseas ventures to expand our pipeline in the area of cancer supportive care. We have also expanded into the area of medical devices based on our collaboration with Maruho Hatsujyo Kogyo, one of our Group companies. We have built a business model utilizing the comprehensive capability of the Maruho Group. Knowledge and know-how created by Maruho, and the medical needs discovered and gathered through its broad information network, are utilized by Maruho Hatsujyo Kogyo for the development of medical devices. We also collaborate with Maruho Medical, Inc., which became a subsidiary in 2018, in modification and sales of their medical devices for active seniors. After confirming certain progress in the U.S. market, we plan to launch the business in Japan. We have also launched a self-care business as the base for creating new value. We will enhance collaboration with dermatologists to increase sales of “iniks,” a skin-care brand for sensitive skin launched in 2014. In addition, Kose Maruho Pharma Co., Ltd., a company established jointly with KOSÉ Corporation in 2019, launched the Carté HD series, a high-performance skin-care brand developed by combining the value of Maruho’s medical know-how with KOSÉ’s cosmetic expertise to provide total care for people with skin problems with a lineup unique to Maruho, ranging from quasi-pharmaceutical products to over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Maruho will continue to actively invest business resources into the enhancement of its medical device and self-care businesses to secure new revenue sources next to prescription drugs for skin diseases, while advancing diversification of its business portfolio through efforts such as enhancing its diagnostic drugs business.We believe that people and organizations are the base of corporate management and the driving force of value creation. In the Fourth Medium-Term Plan, one of the strategic targets is the reform of people and organizations that support the growth engine of the Maruho Group, cultivation of corporate culture, and human resources development to accelerate reform. In the era of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), when unexpected events occur one after another, the spread of COVID-19 has changed work styles considerably. In view of such changes in the social environment, Maruho launched an internal project to consider new work styles that will allow all employees to be autonomous, productive, and creative, under which various measures have been implemented. With regard to organizations, we aim to improve work efficiency by encouraging activities such as work-from-home and promoting paperless operations. For people, we have updated our internal job posting system to develop autonomous human resources, as well as introduced one-on-one meetings and other opportunities to help each employee confirm their career path with their supervisors or coworkers. We also conduct career training by age group with the aim of maintaining motivation and goal awareness.To deliver smiles to patients, we ourselves must be living an active life with a smile. To have a smile, we must be in good mental and physical health. Based on the belief that the health of employees is the health of the Company, Maruho has implemented various measures to promote the health of employees, such as providing physical and mental checkups on a regular basis and prohibiting smoking during work hours.
