As a specialty pharmaceutical manufacturer in the field of dermatology, Maruho has focused its efforts on the research and development of topical drugs. The Kyoto R&D Center plays a central role in this strategy. The Center has a research and development system designed to enable new proposals for treatment and contributions to medical care in light of increasing skin disorders due to changes in the living and social environments.
In addition to the development of new active pharmaceutical ingredients, the Center aims to maximize the value and minimize the time required for development by making drugs for topical application. Furthermore, the Center actively pursues alliances with a variety of different research institutions in Japan and throughout the world to improve the development pipeline required for medical care. This strategic approach to research and development is the driving force in the Center and is played out under the watchwords of “maintaining 10 or more projects with in pipeline at all times” and “supplying new drugs to patients as rapidly as possible”.
Maruho aims to be a leader in the field of dermatology with the Kyoto R&D Center as the dermatological hub.

The research and development laboratories, which research and verify the efficacy and safety of compounds for the treatment of skin disorders, execute non-clinical and clinical investigations for the filing new drug applications for approval. We perform the central system functions that facilitate research and development. The different functional departments cooperate with each other to provide the flexibility and efficiency for drug development. We also acquire reliable scientific data in accordance with regulations and guidelines.

Specializing in formulation technologies for topical application as well as analytical technologies, these research laboratories optimize topical application. We focus on productivity (economical and stable manufacturing methods) and usability (comfort in application, ease of use, and container shape, which contribute to the improvement in patient compliance), as well as efficacy, safety, and quality. We manufacture investigational new drugs from Phase I to III, and have built a quality control system based on the Investigational New Drug GMP in order to supply appropriate investigational drugs.
